How to get a Social Security number with an EAD

If you are an immigrant in the US with an EAD, you may be eligible to get a Social Security number (SSN). An SSN is a nine-digit number that the Social Security Administration (SSA) assigns to individuals who work in the US. It is used to track your earnings and contributions to Social Security, which is a government program that provides retirement, disability, and survivor benefits.

There are two ways to get an SSN with an EAD:

  1. Apply for an SSN card when you apply for your EAD. If you are eligible to apply for an SSN, you can request one when you file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization. If USCIS approves your I-765 application, they will send your information to the SSA, and the SSA will mail you an SSN card.
  2. Apply for an SSN card at a Social Security office. If you did not apply for an SSN card when you applied for your EAD, or if you did not receive your SSN card within 7 business days after receiving your EAD, you can apply for one at a Social Security office.

To apply for an SSN card at a Social Security office, you will need to:

  • Complete Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card.
  • Provide documentation of your identity, age, and work authorization.
  • Pay a $30 application fee (unless you are exempt).

You can find a list of acceptable documentation on the SSA website https://www.ssa.gov/.

Once you have completed your application and gathered your documentation, you can schedule an appointment at a Social Security office. You can do this online https://www.ssa.gov/locator/ or by calling 1-800-772-1213.

At your appointment, a Social Security representative will review your application and documentation. If your application is approved, you will receive your SSN card on the spot.

Here are some additional tips for applying for an SSN card:

  • Be sure to bring all of the required documentation to your appointment.
  • If you are unable to provide all of the required documentation, the Social Security representative may be able to help you get it.
  • If you have any questions about the application process, you can ask the Social Security representative for assistance.

If you have any questions or problems applying for an SSN card, you can contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.
